HSBC Holdings PLCHSBC is co-launching a working group to develop standards for agentic payments, positioning it as a leader in AI-driven payment innovation.

The Emerging Payments Association Asia and HSBC have launched an AI & Agentic Payments Working Group to develop standards for agentic commerce across the Asia Pacific region. The initiative will bring together banks, payment networks, fintechs and technology platforms to address unresolved issues such as liability when an AI agent exceeds its mandate, cross-border identification and authentication of agents, and fraud monitoring for software-initiated transactions. The group will develop shared standards for agent identity, authentication and authorisation, trust and liability frameworks, and business models for scaling agentic commerce, with formal policy recommendations scheduled for the 51st ASEAN Summit and APEC Economic Leaders' Week in November 2027. EPAA said the committee level will include 10 to 12 organisations, while the wider working group will include up to 30 organisations.
