A new report from Eurasia Group finds that declining press freedom is the central driver of worsening global accountability over the last five years. The fourth edition of The Atlas of Impunity ranks nearly 200 countries and territories across five metrics, including abuse of human rights and unaccountable governance, and shows the gap between the most accountable and most impunity-prone countries widening to its largest level on record. Unaccountable governance, particularly the erosion of press freedoms, personal liberties, and democratic political culture, is identified as the single largest driver of global impunity. The report also highlights that the United States declined in its ranking due to eroding public administration and rising inequality under the second Trump administration, with its disregard for international institutions and dismantling of foreign aid impacting global accountability networks.
