Mastercard IncDigital euro aims to replace US payment systems like Mastercard in Europe.
The European Union is moving closer to creating a digital euro as a sovereign alternative to US payment systems like Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay, and Google Pay. EU lawmakers are set to vote on the virtual currency on Tuesday, a key step toward approving the rules needed for the project. The European Central Bank first proposed the digital euro in 2020, and if negotiators finalize the legal framework by year-end, a pilot could launch in mid-2027 with public availability targeted for 2029. The digital euro would exist in a separate virtual wallet, offer privacy protections including an offline mode, and not replace cash or existing private payment methods. Nearly two-thirds of euro-area card payments are handled by non-European firms, and 13 of 21 eurozone countries lack a national card scheme, driving the push for a pan-European solution. Banks have expressed concerns over costs estimated at up to 18 billion euros and potential deposit outflows, though the ECB says safeguards will prevent such risks.
