European semiconductor stocks tied to the AI infrastructure boom sold off sharply on September 14 after prominent artificial intelligence figures called for a more cautious pace of frontier-model development. ASML, whose lithography machines are essential for manufacturing the world's most advanced chips, generated €9.3 billion of net sales in the second quarter. The sell-off landed on a market already dealing with higher oil prices and rising bond yields, and some software and information companies previously seen as AI casualties rose as the hardware trade fell, suggesting investors were reconsidering who wins if the AI race proceeds more slowly than assumed.
