Experts believe the United States will continue to use tariff tools even after the era of President Donald Trump, because tariffs bring revenue and bargaining power in trade negotiations. Josh Lipsky, Vice President and President of International Economics at the Atlantic Council, said tariffs will remain in place longer than many expect, as part of broader trade agreements and as a source of government revenue, making it difficult to retreat from such measures. The latest tariff measures, which set rates of 10 percent and 12.5 percent on imports from most trading partners, took effect on Friday, with the Trump administration claiming those countries lack robust measures to prevent forced labor in supply chains, although many countries deny the allegations. An official from a European Union member state said it is unlikely these tariffs will be lifted soon, and it is improbable the US will return to the low tariff levels seen before the Trump era, because the US stance on using tariffs has barely changed regardless of which administration is in power.
