Exxon Mobil CorpExxon plans to automate half its Permian rigs by 2028 to boost output 40% and cut costs.

ExxonMobil is betting on automation to unlock a new Permian oil boom, targeting a nearly 40% increase in output to 2.5 million barrels per day by 2030, up from a record 1.8 million bpd in the second quarter. The company, which operates more than 30 drilling rigs in the Permian Basin, plans to transition half of its fleet to automated rigs by 2028 to improve safety and drilling efficiency. This automation push is part of Exxon's strategy to cut production costs to $35 per barrel this year and $30 per barrel by 2030, while also offsetting declines in Middle East output. However, concerns remain about the steep decline rates of shale wells and the execution risks of scaling automation across a larger fleet, which could limit the payoffs if oil prices fall or costs rise.
