The US Federal Reserve raised interest rates for the first time in more than three years, to a range of 3.75-4.00%, by a unanimous 12-0 vote, and signaled it may raise rates once more this year. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 51,461.78, down 631.21 points, or 1.21%. The S&P 500 closed at 7,551.81, down 33.92 points, or 0.45%, and the Nasdaq closed at 25,978.42, down 3.15 points, or 0.01%. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh said the US economy has strengthened since the previous meeting, but inflation has shown almost no sign of slowing, having remained above the 2% target for five years. By sector, technology stocks posted the biggest gains among the 11 groups calculated in the S&P 500, while energy closed down 3% on lower crude oil prices, with Chevron and Exxon Mobil falling 2.9% and 3.5% respectively. Intel shares jumped 4.0% after reports that South Korea's SK Hynix is in talks with the company about manufacturing memory chips in the United States, and Boeing fell 3.7% after Chief Executive Kelly Ortberg said it will take longer than expected to restore 737 MAX production capacity to 47 aircraft per month.
