Flash Floods Devastate Nepal, Sweeping Away Villages, Bridges, and Power Plants, Urgent Evacuation Ordered

A major flash flood struck the Bhote Koshi river basin in Rasuwa district in northern Nepal, near the Chinese border with Tibet, today, causing damage to villages, markets, bridges, roads, and hydropower projects. Electricity supply was cut off across a wide area, and authorities fear there may be numerous casualties and significant property losses. The Prime Minister has ordered the mobilization of military and police forces for assistance and has ordered the immediate evacuation of people living along the river. The hardest-hit areas are the communities of Chyaprubeshi and Timure in the high mountain region, home to around 50,000 people. The raging waters have swept away villages and several infrastructure construction sites. Narendra Pariyar, the chief district officer of Rasuwa, told Xinhua News Agency that officials are urgently assessing the situation and coordinating with people in the affected areas. Although it is not yet possible to confirm the number of injured, dead, or the extent of damage, it is feared that losses could be severe. Nepal's Ministry of Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation reported that several hydropower plants, as well as roads and bridges, have been severely damaged, leading to power outages in the area. Prime Minister Balendra Shah stated that rescue and relief teams, along with military and police forces, have been dispatched to the area for urgent assistance. He also ordered the evacuation of people from low-lying areas along the river to safe locations and warned residents along the river and downstream areas to maintain the highest level of vigilance, as there is still a risk of further flooding.
