German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said authorities believe the incident bears the hallmarks of an Islamist terrorist attack, and that the suspect is a German citizen of Lebanese descent, born in 2005, with a criminal record of multiple offences and extremist views. He had previously been given a suspended prison sentence of one year and ten months by a court. Chancellor Friedrich Merz condemned the attack on the X platform as an assault on society.
