Alphabet Inc Class CGoogle lost its final appeal against a €4.1 billion European Union antitrust fine, as the European Court of Justice dismissed the challenge brought by Alphabet and its Google subsidiary. The court confirmed the penalty for Google Search's abuse of a dominant position in the context of the Android operating system. The case, first brought in 2018, found Google violated competition rules by tying access to its Play Store to pre-installation of Google Search and Chrome, offering financial incentives for exclusive Google Search placement, and blocking non-Google-certified Android versions. The fine had been reduced from €4.34 billion to €4.1 billion by the EU General Court in 2022. Google said it had updated its contracts to comply and would continue focusing on innovation, while Alphabet stock was about 1% lower in premarket trading following the ruling.
