HSBC Holdings PLCHSBC is in talks to sell its Turkish operations, aligning with its strategy to streamline and focus on core markets

HSBC Holdings is in early-stage discussions with Emirates NBD over a potential sale of its Turkish banking operations, according to a Bloomberg report citing people familiar with the matter. The move aligns with HSBC's strategy under CEO Georges Elhedery to streamline its international footprint and focus on higher-growth core markets. HSBC has steadily reduced its presence in Turkey over the past decade amid challenging economic conditions, currency volatility, and intense competition, now operating a significantly smaller network than its former 300-plus branches. For Emirates NBD, acquiring HSBC Turkey would complement its existing DenizBank franchise, adding wholesale banking, trade finance, and wealth management capabilities to DenizBank's retail and SME strengths. The negotiations are preliminary and would require regulatory approval.
