IBM launched an open-source Lunar Foundation Model with NASA, sending its shares up about 2% to $238.62 on Friday. The model was built from more than 30 data layers gathered by nine instruments across four NASA missions, and it can flag potential ice deposits, chart craters for safer landings and examine volcanic terrain. Benchmark testing showed accuracy gains of as much as 23% over commonly used techniques, giving IBM a powerful showcase for applying AI to complex scientific data. Open sourcing the lunar model will not generate meaningful licensing revenue by itself; the bigger prize is proving IBM can turn enormous datasets into specialized AI systems and then sell the computing infrastructure, software and consulting expertise needed to deploy them on Earth. IBM trades 1.64% below its GF Value estimate of $242.59, suggesting modest upside rather than a deep discount.
