IBM and the University of Chicago have demonstrated a quantum computation that outperforms leading classical methods while providing verifiable accuracy. The team used a novel error correction approach to encode 70 logical qubits, executing 2,415 logical two-qubit operations and 468 logical T gates with effective logical error rates ten times lower than physical error rates. The computation finished in approximately 15 minutes, a task that would demand infeasible amounts of time with classical simulation. The results, published in a new paper on sampling hard circuits with verifiably high fidelity, establish a lower bound on circuit fidelity and mark a significant step toward trusted, scalable quantum computing.
