International Business MachinesCEO predicts quantum computing meaningful by 2028, with research demonstrating quantum advantage and increased investment in chip manufacturing

IBM CEO Arvind Krishna said quantum computing could begin making a measurable contribution to the company's revenue and profit by 2028 or 2029. Speaking on CNBC's Mad Money, Krishna stated that by the end of the 2030s, IBM is now pretty convinced the technology represents a trillion dollars of value. IBM and quantum startup Algorithmiq also unveiled research demonstrating quantum advantage, with Krishna noting the technology revealed previously unobserved material behaviors that could advance battery technology, new materials, fusion energy, and drug development. IBM is increasing its investment in quantum chip manufacturing, including plans for a standalone quantum chip foundry backed by a one-billion-dollar commitment from the U.S. Department of Commerce through CHIPS incentives, matched by another one billion dollars from IBM. Krishna also addressed the company's recent stock sell-off, saying about 40 percent of delayed capital spending deals have already closed in three to four weeks, signaling a deferral rather than a destruction of business.
