Researchers from IBM and the University of Chicago announced on July 30 that they have demonstrated reliable quantum advantage using 70 logical qubits and a new error correction method. They completed a calculation that is practically impossible with conventional simulation techniques in about 15 minutes, and also provided statistical evidence showing the accuracy of the results. Jay Gambetta, director of IBM Research, said, "We are now firmly in the era of quantum advantage." However, breaking Bitcoin's elliptic curve cryptography would require thousands of fault-tolerant logical qubits, a significant gap from the 70 achieved here. IBM aims to perform 100 million operations with 200 logical qubits by 2029, while on the Bitcoin side, an improvement proposal called BIP-360 to introduce quantum computer resistance was proposed in February 2026.
