International Business MachinesCustomers shifting spending to hardware, delaying large software deals, causing IBM shares to fall 25%.
IBM shares fell 25% on July 14 after preliminary second-quarter results showed customers shifting spending toward servers, storage, and memory as hardware prices rose, delaying large software deals. CEO Arvind Krishna noted that value will increasingly shift toward the orchestration and data layers. Palantir Technologies, a pure play on turning enterprise data into decisions, posted 85% revenue growth in May, its 11th consecutive quarter of acceleration, with margins expanding from 44% to 60% year over year. Palantir's net dollar retention reached 150% and total remaining deal value climbed 98% to nearly $12 billion. The stock trades at roughly 39 times this year's sales and 67 times free-cash-flow guidance, while IBM is cheaper at 17 times forward earnings but faces segment-specific cycles.
