The Securities and Exchange Board of India announced on the 10th that it has launched "Demat 2.0," a pilot project to tokenize corporate bonds. According to the announcement, three companies have already issued tokenized bonds, with total issuance reaching 10.25 billion Indian rupees, or about 16.5 billion yen. The breakdown: on September 7, 2026, REC Limited raised 5 billion Indian rupees from 18 investors; on the 9th of the same month, L&T Limited raised 5 billion Indian rupees from 4 investors, and IIFL raised 250 million Indian rupees from a single investor. Demat 2.0 is a mechanism for issuing corporate bonds as digital tokens on a distributed ledger, linked to the Reserve Bank of India's wholesale central bank digital currency, with smart contracts automating interest payments and redemptions. SEBI asserted that India is the first country to meet the characteristics of native issuance on a distributed ledger, ownership records maintained by the national depository, settlement in CBDC, and operation within existing market infrastructure. The project will proceed in stages, with plans to expand to trading on the existing RFQ platform and to provide access for individual investors.
