Intel's 18A-P manufacturing process has entered risk production on schedule, marking another milestone in the company's effort to rebuild its manufacturing leadership and win more foundry customers. The update came at the VLSI Symposium, where Intel engineers outlined improvements over the base 18A node. According to the company, 18A-P delivers up to 9% higher performance at the same power level, or 18% lower power consumption at the same performance level. Intel also highlighted 20% to 40% better thermal resistance, along with greater design flexibility for chipmakers. The enhancements come from a mix of transistor, interconnect and design optimizations, including a new low-resistance transistor option that enables higher drive current and improved frequencies without increasing capacitance.
