Apple Inc.Apple plans to work with Intel on semiconductor design and production, potentially increasing demand for Intel's manufacturing services.
Intel shares climbed about 10% on early Thursday after President Donald Trump said Apple plans to work with Intel on semiconductor design and production in the United States. Trump stated that Apple would join Intel in developing and manufacturing chips domestically as part of broader efforts to expand U.S. semiconductor capacity, and noted the government previously supported Intel's manufacturing ambitions in exchange for a 10% ownership stake. The potential relationship could provide additional manufacturing volume for Intel as it pushes its contract manufacturing business and competes more directly with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, which currently produces chips for Apple and remains in high demand from major customers including Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices. Earlier this week, Intel said its next-generation 18A process technology entered initial production, and the company has been expanding U.S. fabrication capacity following plans unveiled in 2025 to invest about $10 billion in domestic semiconductor facilities.
