InterDigital has been awarded another injunction against Disney by the Unified Patent Court, a pan-European court whose decisions apply across multiple EU countries. The Düsseldorf Local Division ruled that Disney infringed an InterDigital patent covering video encoding techniques related to HEVC and confirmed the patent's validity, with the injunction spanning 11 EU countries including France, Germany and Italy. This marks the second UPC injunction InterDigital has secured against Disney over HEVC encoding, adding to earlier injunctions from national courts in Germany and Brazil over HDR, dynamic video overlays, casting, and additional HEVC and AVC compression technologies. InterDigital's Chief Legal Officer Josh Schmidt stated that HEVC encoding is a key component of the premium viewing experience streaming companies use to justify higher subscription prices, and the company remains committed to receiving fair compensation for Disney's use of its patented innovations.
