Intuitive Surgical announced the publication of a landmark meta-analysis in Annals of Surgery Open, showing that its da Vinci robotic-assisted surgery is associated with statistically significant improvements in patient outcomes compared with laparoscopic and open surgery across 13 common benign conditions. The study, the largest comparative meta-analysis of its kind, analyzed data from more than 14 million procedures. Key findings include 54% lower odds of conversion to open surgery and 13% lower odds of blood transfusion versus laparoscopic surgery, with hospital stays about 4 hours shorter and return to work about 2 days sooner. Against open surgery, da Vinci showed 69% lower odds of blood transfusion, 46% lower odds of 30-day postoperative complications, and 60% lower odds of surgical site infection, with hospital stays about 2 days shorter and return to work about 5 days sooner. The analysis synthesized 14 years of published evidence from 32 countries, including 13 randomized controlled trials and 231 retrospective cohort studies, and was led by Thomas H. Shin, MD, PhD, of Mass General Brigham, with researchers from the University of Virginia and Intuitive.
