Japan's retail sales rose 5.3% year-on-year in May 2026, significantly exceeding market forecasts of a 3.2% gain. This marks the third consecutive month of expansion and the fastest growth pace since November 2023, accelerating from April's upwardly revised 2.8% rise. On a month-on-month basis, retail sales increased 1.9%, slightly moderating from April's 2.1% advance. The Nikkei 225 Index fell 1.3% to below 68,500, while the broader Topix Index slipped 0.5% to 3,944, and the Japanese yen was little changed at around 161.7 per dollar.
