Japan's current account surplus reached 3.9683 trillion yen in May, marking the 16th straight month of surplus. The surplus rose 19.5 percent from a year earlier, but fell short of the median forecast of 4.1213 trillion yen by private research institutions. Breaking it down, primary income posted a surplus of 4.2756 trillion yen, up 2.3 percent, while the trade balance improved by 504 billion yen to swing to a surplus of 6.9 billion yen. On the other hand, the services balance worsened by 141.1 billion yen, slipping into a deficit of 10.3 billion yen, and the combined trade and services balance improved by 362.8 billion yen but remained in deficit at 3.4 billion yen.
