Japanese stocks rebounded on the 9th, with buying dominating as investors took heart from the previous day's rally in US semiconductor shares. Tokyo Electron and Advantest were among those attracting purchases. Takashi Ito, senior strategist at Nomura Securities, noted that while there is caution over the Middle East situation, the market is not in a phase of wholesale retreat from equities, and the logic of continuing to invest in AI and semiconductors, which offer high long-term returns, is at work. Meanwhile, bonds fell under pressure from higher crude oil prices and rising long-term US interest rates, with the yield on newly issued 10-year Japanese government bonds climbing to 2.88%, marking a fresh multi-day high not seen since 1996. The yen edged up slightly against the dollar to the lower 162 range, as wariness of yen-buying intervention by the currency authorities prompted short-covering with the dollar-yen pair nearing the 162.84 level hit on the 1st, its weakest in about 40 years.
