Javelin Biotech and Pfizer announced a landmark publication demonstrating that a liver-centric multi-tissue chip platform can accurately predict human pharmacokinetics of small-molecule drugs. The study, published in Lab on a Chip, integrated liver, kidney, and skeletal muscle tissues in a recirculating microfluidic environment to simultaneously assess hepatic metabolism, renal excretion, and volume of distribution. On-chip parameters were validated through Physiologically Based Pharmacokinetic models and showed high correlation with human clinical data across all Extended Clearance Classification System classes. Javelin Biotech CEO Murat Cirit called the work a major achievement in New Approach Methodologies, noting that small molecules represent 50% of therapeutics in development. Pfizer Senior Research Fellow R. Scott Obach said the results represent a significant step in bridging the gap between laboratory models and clinical reality and support efforts to reduce reliance on animal studies.
