JOGMEC invests up to 5.46 billion yen in Toyota Tsusho's rare earth project, providing capital and validation.
In a rare earth development project that Toyota Tsusho is advancing in Namibia, the Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security, or JOGMEC, has decided to invest up to approximately 5.46 billion yen in a special purpose company. JOGMEC has been conducting surveys with a Canadian company since 2020 and has confirmed the presence of rare earths essential for permanent magnets in electric vehicle motors. In March this year, Toyota Tsusho took over part of the interest and joined the project. The two companies plan to make a final decision on commercialization by fiscal 2026, based on survey results and the business environment.
