BioNTech SEHighlighted as a potential buyout target amid pharma deal surge, with $18B cash and late-stage readouts.

Legend Biotech and BioNTech are being highlighted as potential acquisition targets as pharmaceutical dealmaking accelerates, with over $65 billion in mergers and acquisitions in the first quarter alone. Legend Biotech, which shares Carvykti revenue with Johnson & Johnson, saw its CAR-T therapy sales jump 62% year over year to $597 million in the first quarter, and it has a 99% manufacturing success rate at its New Jersey facility. BioNTech holds approximately $18 billion in cash and has six late-stage clinical readouts expected this year, while its co-founders plan to transition out of management by the end of 2026, potentially opening the door to a buyout. Both stocks have fallen more than 13% over the past year, and neither company is profitable, which could make a buyout more appealing for advancing their pipelines.
