BioNTech SEPotential acquisition target with strong cash position and pipeline, making it attractive for buyout.

Legend Biotech and BioNTech are emerging as potential acquisition targets amid a surge in pharmaceutical dealmaking. The sector saw over $65 billion in mergers and acquisitions in the first quarter, the best since 2020, with 16 deals of at least $1 billion each. Legend Biotech’s Carvykti therapy for multiple myeloma generated $597 million in first-quarter sales, up 62% year over year, and partner Johnson & Johnson projects peak annual sales above $5 billion. The company also reported a 100% objective response rate in phase 1 data for its next-generation in vivo CAR-T therapy and has a 99% manufacturing success rate. BioNTech holds 16.8 billion euros in cash and investments, offsetting a large portion of any purchase price, and has more than 25 phase 2 and phase 3 trials, including six late-stage readouts expected this year. Co-founders Uğur Şahin and Özlem Türeci plan to transition out of management by the end of 2026, potentially opening the door to a buyout. Both stocks have fallen more than 13% over the past year, and neither company is profitable.
