Leveraged exchange-traded funds, particularly single-stock products tied to AI chipmakers Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, are amplifying volatility and reshaping South Korea's equity market. The Hong Kong-listed twice leveraged ETF tracking SK Hynix offered by CSOP has grown into the biggest fund of its type globally, with HK$51.8 billion in assets, and its daily rebalancing trades are driving wild swings in the stock and the broader KOSPI index. Together, Samsung and SK Hynix account for more than 80% of KOSPI trading volume on some days this year, while the KOSPI volatility index hit a record high of 97.99 on June 29. South Korea's Financial Services Commission announced new measures on single-stock leveraged ETFs, including banning promotional events and advising against new launches, after the Financial Supervisory Service said approvals had been prepared hastily.
