It has come to light that several major retailers and restaurant chains are halting procurement of produce from central Mexico amid the spread of the parasitic disease cyclosporiasis in the United States. According to former FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, speaking on CNBC, the FDA's investigation has identified iceberg lettuce served at Taco Bell as a contributing factor to the outbreak, with the lettuce supplied from a central Mexico facility of the private company Taylor Farms. Taylor Farms has voluntarily suspended production of all products at its central Mexico facility and initiated a market recall of related items. The CDC reports that testing has confirmed 4,173 infections in this outbreak, with over 7,400 suspected cases reported, and Gottlieb stated that this is the largest cyclosporiasis outbreak on record. Mexican authorities have explained that Taylor Farms' farm used certified well water and that sample testing of water and lettuce did not detect Cyclospora.
