Mastercard IncMastercard announces enhancements to its virtual card platform, including new security controls and single API access, expanding capabilities and partner integrations.
Mastercard has announced enhancements to its Mastercard In Control virtual card platform, adding new issuer-enforced controls, enhanced clearing controls, and expanded embedded payments capabilities. Citi is the first issuer to launch these new capabilities globally, with both issuer-enforced and clearing controls already live. The platform now supports transactions across 43 countries and 174 currencies, and Mastercard data shows fraud rates on virtual cards are less than one-fifth of those on non-virtual cards. The Commercial Connect API, described by Kaiser Associates as the market's only single-API front door, has been upgraded to allow multiple control sets at the real card level and to enable virtual card creation and payment initiation in one step. Since launching its embedded VCN program in March 2025, Mastercard has signed dozens of partners across expense management, ERP, and accounts payable systems, including SAP, and has expanded use cases in travel with partners like Juniper Travel, HBX Group, and TravelSoft.
