Mastercard reported first-quarter revenue of $8.4 billion, up nearly 16% year over year, while its operating margin reached 61%, underscoring the durability of its capital-light network that earns toll-like fees on transaction volume without taking credit risk. The company repurchased $4.0 billion of stock in the quarter and paid $777 million in dividends, with $11.7 billion still authorized, as earnings per share compounded from $0.13 in Q1 2006 to $4.60 in Q1 2026. Cross-border volume rose 13% on a local currency basis and gross dollar volume hit $2.7 trillion, even as the stock has fallen over 13% year to date in 2026. CEO Michael Miebach said Mastercard is diversified, future-ready, and delivering, while the company continues to invest in agentic commerce and stablecoin infrastructure through initiatives like Mastercard Agent Pay and the planned BVNK acquisition.
