Meta Platforms is facing a federal trial over child safety allegations, with potential penalties of $1.4 trillion. Opening arguments began last Tuesday in a case brought by four state attorneys general accusing Meta of making its platforms addictive to children. The company also faces thousands of lawsuits from school districts, users, and over 40 state AGs. Earlier this month, Meta was ordered to pay $567 million in a New Mexico child harm case. Former engineering director Arturo Béjar testified that safety was treated as an afterthought.
