Meta Platforms Inc.Hidden $420B off-balance-sheet debt from AI infrastructure contracts and massive capex plans raise financial risk.

Meta Platforms carries $420 billion in off-balance-sheet debt tied to AI infrastructure, according to a Nikkei Asia report, far exceeding the $58.7 billion in long-term debt on its balance sheet. The hidden debt, which has grown substantially since 2022, stems from long-term contracts for GPUs and servers not yet delivered, and will move onto the balance sheet as those assets become operational. Meta is one of five companies analyzed—alongside Alphabet, Amazon, Microsoft, and Oracle—that together hold $1.65 trillion in such off-balance-sheet obligations. The company spent $72 billion on capital expenditures in 2025 and plans to spend between $125 billion and $145 billion this year, including a $50 billion data center in Louisiana that is being funded largely by Blue Owl Capital and kept off Meta’s balance sheet. Evercore analyst Mark Mahaney suggests Meta may challenge neocloud providers like CoreWeave and Nebius Group rather than compete directly with the largest hyperscalers.
