Meta Platforms' Facebook and Instagram ran thousands of ads for AI nudify apps in breach of company policies, delivered by one of its few advertising partners in China, according to a report from the nonprofit Tech Transparency Project. Beijing-based GatherOne Inc., which connects Chinese firms to Meta's ad services, was responsible for some 7,600 ads in recent months for mobile apps that transpose women's faces onto naked bodies and create sexualized videos. The report highlighted an app created in China that allowed sharing of material some users flagged as child pornography. Meta said it bans such ads and takes aggressive steps to combat them, while GatherOne said it complies with Meta's policies and is suspending new ad accounts for AI nudifying services. The findings come as Meta derived $18.4 billion in China sales in 2024, representing 11% of its global revenue.
