Meta Platforms Inc.Meta released its open-weight Muse Glimmer AI model, attracting developers and signaling a strategic shift toward open models.

Meta Platforms shares advanced roughly 2.3% Tuesday after the company released its Muse Glimmer model under an Apache 2.0 license, putting the weights of the roughly 29.6-billion-parameter model directly into developers' hands. Meta designed Glimmer to tackle autonomous tasks on consumer hardware, compressing the language-model weights below 20 gigabytes through roughly four-bit quantization so it can run within a 24- or 32-gigabyte memory envelope. The model handles text and images, works through multistep problems, uses tools, and packs a context window above 131,000 tokens with training across more than 100 languages. The launch signals another swing toward open models following Meta's proprietary Muse Spark, as the company seeks to attract developers into its ecosystem without necessarily charging for every AI query. Second-quarter revenue surged 28% to $60.8 billion, even as capital spending ballooned to $31.08 billion, underscoring how Meta's advertising business is financing an enormous bet on AI distribution.
