Meta Platforms Inc.Meta is moving its custom Iris AI chip into production to lower AI computing costs and tailor resources, enhancing its AI capabilities.
Meta Platforms is moving its in-house Iris AI chip into production in September as part of a plan to double its data center capacity to 14 gigawatts by 2027, according to an internal memo. CEO Mark Zuckerberg said during the first-quarter earnings call that leading the industry in compute efficiency is a strategic advantage. The custom application-specific integrated circuit, designed with Broadcom and manufactured by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, aims to lower AI computing costs and tailor resources for recommendation systems and advertising across Meta's apps. The company plans up to $145 billion in capital expenditures this year, and the top four hyperscalers—Meta, Microsoft, Amazon, and Alphabet—are projected to spend between $600 billion and $700 billion on capex in 2026. Meta's trailing cash flow from operations of $124 billion and a 33% year-over-year revenue increase in the first quarter underscore the profitability of its AI-enhanced ad business.
