MetaMask Launches New Feature to Detect Romance Scams Before Transfers

Crypto wallet MetaMask announced on September 14 that it has introduced a new feature that detects signs of romance scams and investment fraud before a transfer is made and warns users. The feature inspects transaction details at the time of transfer and checks whether the recipient address has been reported as malicious to determine the likelihood of fraud. If there is suspicion, it displays several questions, such as "Have you actually met this person in person?", "Were you guaranteed profits?", and "Are you being rushed to send the money?", prompting users to review the safety of the transaction before sending. However, it is not a feature that blocks transactions outright, and the final decision is left to the user. According to the FBI's 2025 Internet Crime Report, reported losses from crypto investment fraud in the United States reached 7.2 billion dollars. The feature is available on MetaMask Mobile version 8.11 and later and the browser extension version 13.48 and later, and covers all EVM-compatible networks.
