Mexico fast-tracks safety plan for Michoacán in bid to resume avocado exports to the US

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has revealed that the government is drawing up an action plan to boost security in the state of Michoacán so that avocado exports to the United States can resume. The export process was suspended on Wednesday after the US issued a security alert and ordered government personnel in the area to halt operations because of threats to US interests. The plan aims to reinforce National Guard forces in certain areas that still lack sufficient access, alongside ongoing discussions with US authorities. Mexico’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has already requested talks with the US Embassy, proposing that inspections resume with inspectors from Mexico’s National Food Safety Agency also deployed on the ground. Michoacán is the largest producer and exporter of avocados to the US market.
