Apple Inc.Apple is highlighted as the outlier with restrained AI spending and the only Magnificent Seven stock above its 10-year average valuation.
Michael Burry says the market has voted and the results are clear that Big Tech's AI spending is dragging down the S&P 500 while Apple wins. In a July 27 post on X, Burry shared two Bloomberg charts showing a negative correlation between forward capital expenditure estimates and stock performance for Magnificent Seven companies, with Apple as the outlier boasting relatively restrained AI spending and the only valuation above its 10-year average. Nvidia, Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet, and Meta have all seen their valuations decline below their 10-year average as of July 24. Burry has been bearish on AI, previously disclosing put options on Nvidia and Palantir, and warning that an AI crash could trigger contagion through insurers overly invested in data center and chip leases. Fitch Ratings also cautioned that the global credit backdrop is increasingly vulnerable to an AI market correction given the scale of investment.
