Micron Technology IncApple's potential purchase from CXMT could increase competition and erode Micron's profit margins.
Micron Technology shares fell 2% Monday after reports that Apple is seeking U.S. government permission to buy high-bandwidth memory chips from Chinese supplier CXMT, raising concerns that new Chinese supply could erode Micron’s profit margins. CXMT primarily makes DRAM, which is a key driver of Micron’s profitability, though Mizuho analyst Jordan Klein noted that DRAM and NAND supply remains well below true end demand. He also cautioned that there is no guarantee the U.S. or Chinese governments would allow such purchases, while DigiTimes reported that buyers may have to pay 2.5 times 2026 prices to secure DRAM in 2027.
