Micron Technology IncDebuted new AI storage platform with Microchip, boosting AI workload performance.
Micron Technology shares rose more than 8% on Tuesday after the company and Microchip Technology showcased a PCIe Gen 6 storage system designed to support growing artificial intelligence workloads. The companies presented the technology at the 2026 FMS Conference, combining Microchip's Switchtec PCIe Gen 6 switches with Micron's 9650 NVMe solid-state drives to create a storage platform aimed at AI, cloud computing, and high-performance applications. The architecture connects processors with multiple storage drives while allowing the SSDs to operate at Gen 6 speeds, with PCIe 6.0 providing 64 gigatransfers per second per lane, twice the bandwidth of the previous generation. The system is designed for workloads including AI training, real-time analytics, and large databases, and the companies highlighted faster data movement and lower latency as potential benefits for data center operators. Microchip shares also climbed about 4.6% to $78.68 in premarket trading as investors assessed the potential demand for faster storage connectivity amid expanding AI infrastructure.
