Microsoft CorporationMicrosoft is eliminating 4,800 jobs globally, with the struggling Xbox gaming unit bearing the brunt as it sheds a fifth of its workforce. The cuts, which represent 2.1% of the company's total headcount, will also affect commercial and engineering teams. Xbox is cutting 3,200 positions, and its chief executive Asha Sharma told staff the business is not healthy, operating at margins three to ten times lower than comparable platform and publishing businesses, and declared 'we must reset Xbox.' The restructuring includes transferring ownership of two gaming studios, including Cambridge-based Ninja Theory, and returning two others to management ownership. Microsoft's chief people officer Amy Coleman said the eliminated roles are not being replaced by AI, though the company continues to invest in AI skills and infrastructure.
