Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, President of Myanmar, will travel to Thailand for an official visit between 3 and 4 August. He is scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul to discuss several urgent bilateral issues. The Thai government plans to raise the problem of toxic substances in the Kok River for serious discussion, seeking cooperation from the Myanmar government to expedite a resolution. Other topics include haze from agricultural burning, suppression of drug production sources, and cooperation on environmental and border security matters. Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow stated that this visit is part of a parallel-track approach, with Thailand continuing to uphold the five-point consensus of ASEAN. He expressed hope that the election which brought Senior General Min Aung Hlaing to the presidency would open the door to a new round of talks with ethnic groups and democratic forces in Myanmar. Government spokesperson Ratchada Thanadirek said Thailand is not concerned about its image in welcoming the Myanmar leader, because as a neighbouring country, if peace and good things happen in Myanmar, the Thai people and Thailand will also benefit.
