At a press conference following a cabinet meeting on the 24th, Minister of State for Economic and Fiscal Policy Minoru Jōnai said the government will carefully analyze and consider the impact on the Japanese economy of new tariffs imposed by the United States on 60 countries and regions, including Japan. The Trump administration activated the new tariffs on the 24th, citing insufficient measures against forced labor, and for Japan, if the existing tariff rate is below 12.5 percent, the combined rate with the new tariff will be set at 12.5 percent. When asked whether the government's growth strategy and its basic policy on economic and fiscal management have failed to dispel financial market concerns, Minister Jōnai countered that the Sanae Takaichi administration's responsible active fiscal policy carefully examines the feasible fiscal scale while steadily reducing the government debt-to-GDP ratio and takes into account securing market confidence, stressing that it is not a reckless fiscal policy.
