BioNTech SEBioNTech is closing plants due to declining COVID-19 vaccine demand, affecting jobs and indicating reduced business.
Moderna is exploring investments in German manufacturing facilities and is particularly interested in acquiring sites that BioNTech plans to shut down as part of its restructuring, CEO Stephane Bancel told Handelsblatt. Bancel said the facilities would be an interesting option compared with building a new one if the right partnership with the German government is found. BioNTech announced in May it would close several manufacturing sites in Germany and Singapore, affecting up to 1,860 jobs, amid declining COVID-19 vaccine demand, with facilities in Idar-Oberstein, Marburg and Tuebingen set to shut by the end of 2027 while divestment options are explored.
