Moody's warns that the rapidly escalating race to invest in artificial intelligence infrastructure is reshaping the financial structure of the world's largest technology companies, shifting them from a low-capital model to one that requires massive assets and spending, which could weigh on credit quality over the long term. A Moody's research report says the unprecedented surge in AI investment is forcing major cloud providers, or hyperscalers, namely Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet, Meta, Oracle, and CoreWeave, to rely more on borrowing, equity fundraising, and off-balance-sheet financing to support their data center and AI infrastructure expansion plans. Capital expenditure for this group is projected to reach roughly 785 billion dollars in 2026 before climbing to 1 trillion dollars in 2027. Direct debt across the six companies has already risen to about 460 billion dollars, while the value of their data center lease commitments has soared to 1.2 trillion dollars, with more than 820 billion dollars of that tied to data centers still under construction. Although these obligations are not recorded as debt on financial statements, Moody's views them as debt-like commitments. The large upfront investments, with AI revenue materializing gradually over the long term, are pressuring free cash flow at the big tech firms. However, Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, and Meta still have some of the strongest financial positions in the world, making the near-term risk of an investment-grade downgrade relatively low. In contrast, the pressure is concentrated on companies with lower credit ratings, such as Oracle, which is rated Baa2 with a negative outlook, just two notches above junk status, while CoreWeave, an AI cloud provider, is rated Ba3 in the high-yield category and relies on complex private debt structures for funding. Moody's is also monitoring the emergence of a closed-loop AI ecosystem, where several big tech companies invest billions of dollars in AI developers like OpenAI and Anthropic, while those AI firms channel large sums back into cloud services from the same investors, making each party's revenue and growth increasingly interdependent and adding structural risk. Still, Moody's believes demand for AI and cloud services remains robust, and the major cloud providers hold long-term customer contracts worth hundreds of billions of dollars, which support revenue and financial strength over the long haul.
