JPMorgan Chase & CoMark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's, says President Donald Trump's immigration policies are driving up unemployment among American workers and contributing to supply-side stagflationary shocks. Zandi noted that foreign-born unemployment fell below native-born unemployment in October 2025, and he expects a future policy shift but warns of immediate stagflationary impacts with price increases and no output growth. He cited tariffs and the war in Iran as additional supply shocks, saying the only reason the economy isn't in complete shambles is because of AI. Zandi attributes rising native-born unemployment to lower labor demand and a lack of skills for jobs traditionally held by immigrants, while the Labor Department warned the immigration crackdown could worsen farmworker shortages and raise food prices.
