Nepal-China Border Lake Overflows, Rescuers Temporarily Halt Operations

A lake formed by a landslide on the Nepal-China border began overflowing on Friday, prompting authorities to temporarily suspend search and rescue operations due to the risk of further flooding in an area already devastated by flash floods on Wednesday. The disaster has claimed 489 lives in Nepal and 5 in Tibet, with nearly 1,000 people still missing. The lake's water volume increased by more than 2.5 million cubic meters before overflowing into the Bhotekoshi River. Nepalese authorities halted rescue operations for about 90 minutes, while China withdrew all personnel to safe areas. President Xi Jinping has ordered an accelerated search for the missing and heightened vigilance against secondary disasters. The United States has offered assistance, but Nepal has not yet accepted foreign aid.
