Nextera Energy IncNextEra's Grid Composer AI tool saved customers over $20 million this year by optimizing dispatch and outage scheduling across its generating fleet.
NextEra Energy and Santee Cooper detailed AI deployments that have delivered real dollar savings, with NextEra's Grid Composer tool saving customers over $20 million this year and Santee Cooper expecting a custom weather model to avoid spot-market purchases costing up to $100,000 an hour. During a Google Cloud virtual roundtable, NextEra's Rich Argentieri said the platform, built on Gemini Enterprise, optimizes dispatch and outage scheduling across Florida Power and Light's generating fleet, processing roughly half a trillion data points daily. Santee Cooper's Tami Wilson said the utility is developing a forecasting model based on Google's WeatherNext to account for local microclimates, aiming to cut forecast errors that can swing power needs by 100 megawatts per hour. Both utilities emphasized governance and training, with Wilson noting a "human in the loop" approach and no job replacements, while Google's Raiford Smith highlighted a sixfold improvement in computing power per unit of electricity in data centers.
